Reading today on mashable I came across this awesome example of social media in use for the everyday needs, and just had to share it with you guys.

Parents love their kids, but everyone deserves a break once in awhile. If you don’t have family or friends nearby who would be willing to watch your children while you and your partner grab some together time, or even if you’re a single parent who just needs a break, having access to a trustworthy babysitter is a sanity saver.

It can be tough to find the right person to care for your kids if you’re new to your neighborhood or if you’re a new parent. If you’re in need of a caregiver-for-hire for a few hours, then here are some ideas on how to use the Web to find someone near you.

One thing worth noting is that there are a number of websites out there that can help you find a sitter for the kids. You can divide them up into two groups: sites that you can use for free; and sites that charge some kind of fee (normally a subscription fee) to give you access to their database of child care providers.

You can read the rest here: http://mashable.com/2008/10/17/how-to-find-a-babysitter-online/

Hi everyone!

I have created a Kid’s Skateboard Art Contest to allow kids to be creative and expand their imaginations.
The winning child’s artwork will be manufactured by Crimson Skateboards into kids size skate decks to be sold nationwide and portion of proceeds to benefit Festival of Children, a non profit organization that hosts and donates 100% of proceeds to over 300 charitable organizations from Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation to Make a Wish Foundation to
Easter Seals, etc.

Its very simple, let the kids design anything they want. The theme is “A Perfect World”. Any form of
media can be used, crayon, paint, pen, marker, etc. etc.

Please take the time to print out as many of the the attached art sheets and give out to as many
kids ages 10 yrs old and under. Please make sure to set your printer to landscape and set “fit to page”

Please feel free to forward this out to everyone you know with kids!

Good Luck and Thank you!

Orlando, Fla. – Online Labels, Inc., the leader in blank labels for laser and inkjet printers, announces the launch of Cause Related Labeling, a program designed to provide all qualifying non-profit organizations and charitable causes nationwide with free labels. The effort will assist all types of organizations that use printable labels in their everyday operations such as special events, branding, fundraising efforts, direct mailings and administrative purposes.

In three days since the program’s inception, OnlineLabels.com has honored the requests of over 15 different charitable causes, donating approximately 10,000 labels. These organizations include Habitat for Humanity, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Child Abuse Prevention Association, Autism Society of America and The Georgia Writers Association. For an updated list, visit http://www.onlinelabels.com/ol_helped.htm.

“I heard that OnlineLabels.com was a great place to buy labels, so when I received an email from them I checked out their site and noticed they were offering to donate labels to non-profit organizations,” said Jeanne Powers, founder of Handicapped Friends Pen Pals Club. “I was a little skeptical, but filled out the request anyway. I was so blown away when I got a response telling me they were sending the labels I asked for.”
Representatives from non-profit organizations or special events that benefit non-profit organizations may visit http://www.onlinelabels.com/charity.htm to view the terms and conditions of the program. When filling out the application, users may select any label size and material in quantities of up to 100 label sheets per request. Currently, any label shape offered by OnlineLabels.com may be requested including, ribbon labels, name tags, address labels, CD/DVD labels, specialty shape labels, water bottle labels, circle labels, shipping labels and many more.

“As a company, we decided this program would be a fantastic way for us to give back to the many causes that do good in this world, since they have a need and we have the labels” says Dave Carmany, president of OnlineLabels.com. “To us, there’s no limit on how many causes and organizations we can help through our Cause Related Labeling program, and it’s absolutely brought everyone in our company closer together since we’ve already helped a few causes that personally mean a great deal to people around here.”

To further support this initiative, OnlineLabels.com will provide free access to Maestro Label Designer, an exclusive tool that enables users to create, save and print label designs with no downloading necessary. Additionally, free blank label templates as well as predesigned label templates are available on the Company’s website for use in label creation.

“The Cause Related Labeling program enables every size and type of non-profit organization to receive labels that they can use for whatever their need may be,” adds Carmany. “Whether it’s customizing water bottle labels for an event, addressing postcards for a mailing, or simply creating name tags for a fundraiser, if we can make buying labels one less headache to worry about, then this program will be a success.”

Launched 1998, Online Labels Inc. offers the world’s largest selection of blank labels for laser and inkjet printers. A division of Consolidated Label, Inc., the Company is a privately-held label manufacturer and Internet retailer based in Longwood Fla. OnlineLabels.com serves customers all over the world for personal and professional labeling needs in a variety of applications. For more information, visit www.OnlineLabels.com or call 1-888-575-2235.

I’m laughing at myself this morning, as I come into the office and immediately go to my administrative tasks: update calendar and empty inbox.

After trying out the GTD format, and then being a Franklin Covey convert for a while… and then the reality of working for someone else (ie. you use software designed to make your life easier that really -thanks to poor implementation- makes your life harder) have developed my own set of rules for the management of my day/time.

This might work for you, it might not…. but you can waste a couple of minutes of your life reading it if you want to!

1. Keep your calendar updated with REAL events… not those “maybe” appointments that you know never really happen… or those meetings that are scheduled for 30 minutes but always take 2 hours… get real!!

2. Review and update your calendar at the beginning and ending of every day. Keeping a calendar real takes real work, but it’s worth it. Schedule out your time to do admin, put your tasks time in, get your calendar to look like your reality. EVEN MORE go back to yesterday and update that calendar so it reflects what you really were doing.

3. Clean out your inbox. This comes from a long history of being an underling – I may have a msg in there that either gives me back an hour (someone finished the project so I don’t have to) or takes away an hour (last minute presentations). So going through my inbox gives me the piece of mind to know that I am actually working on what’s real as of this minute. If I don’t sort out the reading to my “reading” folder, and the non-work stuff to my non-work folders, I end up reading all that junk when I should be working, and even worse working when I should be goofing around with family/personal stuff.

I could go on and on, but that would tyrannical (and take me much more than the 10 minutes I have set aside to write this article), so I’m going to wrap it up here and wish you the best of luck. Whether you use my system, someone else’s, or mashup your own system… GET A SYSTEM and STICK TO IT. Your piece of mind will increase and your stress will decrease. I promise.

Cheers,

Rebekah

(from the soccer field)

The event was hosted up there (great view, lemme tell you!) overlooking 27,000 seats.

The Chapter seems very robust, and while I only knew one person walking in, I did get to meet quite a few people. I had forgotten how inclusive the restaurant industry can be – and what it feels like to be the “new girl” in a group. On a high note, I had missed those same things – what a tightly knit group restaurateurs are, and how familial. This is what I fell in love with about the industry back in high school when I decided to go to UNLV in the first place.

All in all, I liked the event, and the people I met. Blair Salsbury was great, so much that I went up and said hello at the end of the event. He is an engaging public speaker and was so nice to keep checking in with me for the event – I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone more, and attending more events in the future.
